Cultural Cache Online Season 4: “Two Orphans (Refugees of Cambodia)” by Pacita Abad
In this episode, we’re featuring the late artist Pacita Abad and her work “Two Orphans (Refugees of Cambodia)” from the CCP 21st Century Art Museum Collection.
About the Artist:
Pacita Abad (b. 1946, d. 2004) was a painter and printmaker. She received her bachelor’s degree in 1968 from the University of the Philippines and her master’s degree in 1972 from the University of San Francisco. While Abad did paintings and prints, her principal medium was trapunto, the art of joining together and quilting pieces of plain or printed cloth with an embossed design produced by outlining the pattern with single stitches and then padding this with yarn or cotton. Moreover, Abad is known for her literally and metaphorically layered visual treatises on the global motility of Filipinos and other diasporic peoples. Her influence is also manifested in the sharing of her technical processes done through art school extension programs in the Philippines during respites from her many travels.

About the Speaker:
Florentina (Tina) P. Colayco has more than thirty years professional experience in art and design education, publishing, curatorial work and museum management. She continues to teach at the College of Fine Arts of the University of the Philippines, where she served as the dean from October 2006 to September 2012. Colayco is currently the President of the Metropolitan Museum of Manila (The M), a position she has held since 2013.
